AI Visibility Watch #5 — July 3, 2026: Mid-Year Citation Audit, What Actually Changed in B2B GEO Since January

    The mid-year picture

Six months into 2026, the B2B GEO landscape looks meaningfully different than it did in January. We pulled the aggregate data across our client base — anonymized, normalized to prompt baskets of 50–200 buyer queries per account — and three patterns stand out.

    1. Surface mix has shifted toward Google + ChatGPT

In January, Perplexity punched well above its user share in citation surface because its source cards were the most legible. By July, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search have caught up on UX and pulled ahead on volume. Across our clients, AI Overviews + ChatGPT Search now account for roughly 55% of measurable LLM-attributed traffic, with Perplexity at ~22%, Claude at ~12%, and the rest spread across Copilot, Gemini app, and others.

Practical implication: if your GEO program was Perplexity-first six months ago, rebalance. The biggest single lever today is structured presence in answer engine results for AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search.

“The mid-year story isn't 'one engine won.' It's that the surface mix flattened — you now have to win in four places, not one. Programs built for a single LLM look thin by July.”

    2. Citation density up, per-citation traffic down

Average citations per client per month rose ~31% H1 over H2 2025. Click-through per citation fell ~18%. Net traffic is still up, but the shape changed: visibility is broader, attention per surface is thinner. That makes AI share of voice a better north-star metric than raw citation count.

It also means the old pattern — "rank once, harvest forever" — is gone. The clients seeing the strongest pipeline lift are showing up across 30–60 distinct prompts per month, not dominating one.

    3. The three changes that did the heavy lifting

    1. Third-party listicle placement. AI Overviews and Perplexity both disproportionately cite "best [category]" listicles. Getting into 3–5 credible third-party rankings remains the single highest-ROI GEO move. (See our June 19 issue on the long-tail Overviews shift.)
    2. Glossary depth. Clients who shipped 10+ category-defining glossary pages with schema for AI and DefinedTerm markup saw 2–3× the citation rate of clients who shipped only money pages. LLMs love primary definitions.
    3. Named-author tier-1 bylines. Claude and ChatGPT Search both weight authorship signals heavily. One Forbes, HBR, or MIT Tech Review byline per quarter from a named executive moved measurable visibility on every client where it ran.

“If you only do three things in the back half: get on third-party listicles, deepen your glossary, and ship one tier-1 byline per quarter under a named author. Everything else compounds off those three.”

    What to do next week

    • Audit your prompt basket — are you tracking ChatGPT Search and AI Overviews with the same rigor as Perplexity?
    • Pick one glossary gap and ship it this week. Use the existing pattern: TL;DR, primary definition, attributed quote, schema.
    • Brief one tier-1 byline pitch for July. Named author, primary data, 1,500+ words.
