AI Visibility Watch #3 — June 19, 2026: AI Overviews Hits the 'Best Of' Long Tail
Founder & CEO, Crackle PR
This week in AI visibility
1. AI Overviews invaded the long tail of 'best of' queries
Until this week, AI Overviews covered head-term comparisons ("best CRM," "best project management software") and skipped the long tail. As of this week's rollout, queries like "best PR agency for Series B SaaS" and "best fintech compliance vendor for European expansion" return Overviews with named vendors.
2. Source patterns: third-party listicles dominate
The vendors named in these new Overviews are pulled almost exclusively from third-party listicles — G2 category leaders, Capterra rankings, TechCrunch and Forbes roundups, vertical trade press. Vendor self-description pages ("Why we're the best CRM") are essentially ignored.
Translation: you cannot rank yourself into AI Overviews. You have to be named by sources Google considers authoritative. Earned listicle placements have moved from nice-to-have to a measurable distribution channel.
“In the AI Overviews era, the question isn't 'do you rank for your category?' It's 'do the sources that rank for your category name you?' Two completely different jobs.”
3. What to do this week
- Run the query — your top 10 commercial keywords plus "best [category] for [vertical/stage]." Note which vendors get named.
- Audit your listicle presence — G2, Capterra, Gartner Peer Insights, plus the top 3 trade publications in your category. Identify gaps.
- Pitch inclusion — for trade press roundups, pitch the reporter with a one-paragraph "why we deserve a slot" plus a customer reference. This is now the highest-ROI PR activity in most B2B categories.
