AI Visibility Watch #2 — June 12, 2026: Perplexity's Source Cards & the Death of Generic 'What Is' Posts

This week in AI visibility
1. Perplexity's redesigned source cards reward authority over keyword match
Perplexity quietly shipped a new source-card design this week that surfaces publisher domain, author, and recency far more prominently than headline-keyword match. We watched share-of-citation for thin "what is X" posts drop noticeably in our weekly tracking — and primary-source pages (benchmarks, founder quotes, named-expert commentary) rise to fill the slots.
2. The "what is X" content era is ending
For five years the cheapest play in B2B tech content was the definitional post: "What is [category]," "What is [acronym]." Those are now table stakes — every competitor has one, and LLMs have already extracted the definition. They no longer earn citations.
What does earn citations now: original benchmarks, named-expert commentary, and content that takes a position. Our Q2 LLM Citation Benchmark showed primary-source pages out-cited definitional pages by 4.3× across 200 sampled queries.
“Definitions are commodities. Opinions, data, and named experts are not. The brands winning AI visibility right now publish work LLMs can't get anywhere else.”
3. Three moves to make this week
- Add a named expert quote to your top five commercial pages — founder, head of engineering, head of customer success. Wrap each in
Quotationschema. - Publish one piece of original data — even a 200-respondent survey, a benchmark from your own product telemetry, or a citation count across competitors. Date it. Sign it.
- Refresh
dateModifiedon your top 20 pages after any meaningful edit. Perplexity weights recency heavily in the new source cards.
