Tech PR Agency vs Marketing Agency: Which Do You Actually Need?
Founder & CEO, Crackle PR
Founders ask this constantly: should we hire a tech PR agency or a marketing agency? They sound adjacent, sometimes use the same vocabulary, and both promise pipeline. They're not the same thing. Here's how to choose — or how to sequence them when you need both.
What a tech PR agency does
A tech PR agency earns third-party validation: media coverage, analyst recognition, executive thought leadership, awards, and — increasingly — AI citations. The deliverable is credibility, owned by someone other than you, that customers and investors trust precisely because you didn't pay for it.
Channels: tier-1 business press, trade media, analyst firms, podcasts, conferences, LinkedIn (organic), AEO press releases, AI engines.
What a marketing agency does
A marketing agency builds and runs the demand machine: paid acquisition, SEO, content, lifecycle email, ABM, conversion-rate optimization, marketing automation. The deliverable is direct demand — measured leads, MQLs, opportunities, pipeline.
Channels: Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads, programmatic, SEO content, blog, gated assets, webinars, nurture sequences, retargeting.
Where they overlap (and where they don't)
Overlap: content strategy, brand positioning, messaging architecture, LinkedIn organic, SEO-adjacent content. Both will claim to do these. PR agencies do them through an editorial lens; marketing agencies through a conversion lens.
Don't overlap: PR doesn't buy media. Marketing doesn't pitch journalists. PR builds analyst relationships; marketing doesn't. Marketing builds attribution and funnel infrastructure; PR doesn't. See also PR vs content marketing and PR vs demand gen.
If you hire a marketing agency to do PR, you'll get content marketing labeled as PR. If you hire a PR agency to do marketing, you'll get great brand work and no funnel.
Which one to hire first
Hire marketing first if: you have product-market fit, a known acquisition channel that needs scaling, and clear funnel metrics. Demand gen ROI is more measurable.
Hire PR first if: you're entering a category where credibility is the gate (cybersecurity, fintech, AI, regulated tech), you're fundraising in the next 12 months, you sell into enterprise (analyst-led buying), or your AI-search visibility is zero and competitors are getting cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Hire both if: you're past Series A and need both demand and credibility. Sequence: PR a quarter ahead of marketing so the credibility surface is in place when ad spend ramps.
How they should work together
In a healthy stack, the PR agency seeds the credibility (placements, analyst quotes, executive bylines, AI citations) and the marketing agency amplifies it (paid promotion of earned media, retargeting on engaged readers, gated assets that cite the analyst report PR landed). PR feeds the funnel from the top; marketing converts it down.
If your PR and marketing teams aren't in the same monthly meeting, you're losing 30–50% of the leverage.

Frequently asked questions
Should I hire a tech PR agency or a marketing agency first?
Marketing first if you have product-market fit and a scalable acquisition channel. PR first if credibility is the gate (cybersecurity, fintech, AI, enterprise) or you\'re fundraising in 12 months. Past Series A, you usually need both — sequenced with PR a quarter ahead.
Can a marketing agency do PR?
Marketing agencies can run content marketing labeled as PR, but they typically don\'t pitch journalists, run analyst relations, or build AI citation strategy. If you need real earned media, hire a tech PR agency.
Can a PR agency do marketing?
PR agencies can do brand strategy and messaging well, but they don\'t run paid acquisition, SEO infrastructure, or funnel attribution. For demand gen, hire a marketing agency.
What's the difference between PR and demand gen for B2B tech?
PR builds credibility (earned, third-party). Demand gen builds direct demand (paid, measurable). PR feeds the top of the funnel; demand gen converts it. The best B2B tech stacks run both in sync.
How do PR and marketing teams work together effectively?
Shared monthly meeting, shared editorial calendar, shared dashboard that includes share of voice, AI citations, and pipeline-attributed coverage alongside paid media metrics. Marketing should amplify earned PR through paid retargeting and gated content built around landed coverage.
