Forbes: Journalists Stop Returning Your Calls — Parry Headrick on Protecting Brand Voice in AI Outputs

On June 18, 2026, the Forbes Agency Council published Not Protecting Brand Voice In AI Outputs? 19 Big Consequences. Crackle PR founder Parry Headrick led the panel with the consequence that hits B2B tech the hardest: journalists stop returning your calls.

“Reporters can spot AI-generated pitches and press materials instantly, and many are openly done with them. Once your agency or comms team gets that reputation, earned media dries up fast. Your brand voice in PR materials needs to sound like a human being wrote it, because a human relationship depends on it.”

Why this matters more for B2B tech than any other category

Tier-one B2B tech reporters at Forbes, The Information, TechCrunch, Bloomberg, and the WSJ enterprise desk are inundated. They are also unusually fluent in AI — they cover it. They notice the em dashes, the "in today's rapidly evolving landscape" openers, the symmetrical bullet structure, the suspicious lack of a real opinion. The instant they tag your pitch as machine-written, your inbox goes cold and stays cold.

The earned-media playbook depends on a tiny, finite number of human relationships. Burning them with AI-slop pitches is a structural error, not a stylistic one.

The Crackle PR position: humans on the pitch, always

    1. Senior strategists write every pitch and founder quote. AI can scaffold research, format a release, or draft a first pass on a corporate boilerplate. It cannot write the sentence that gets a reporter to open the email.
    2. Codify the founder voice. Real samples, do's and don'ts, vocabulary, forbidden phrases, and the points of view only the founder holds. Feed that to every tool — and to every junior who never actually ships pitches at Crackle, because we don't have any.
    3. Use AI in the back half, not the front half. Schema, llms.txt, AEO release formatting, citation tracking — all good places for AI assistance. Outbound pitches, bylines, and crisis statements are not.

How this connects to GEO and AI visibility

The irony of the Forbes piece is that the brands most desperate for AI visibility are the same ones at highest risk of getting locked out by alienating the human reporters who write the cited tier-one stories in the first place. LLMs don't manufacture authority — they aggregate it from publications written by humans who decided your story was worth their byline.

That's the through-line from our earlier Forbes piece on earned media as AI infrastructure. Earned media feeds AI answers. Earned media requires journalist trust. Journalist trust requires a recognizably human brand voice. Skip a step and the whole stack collapses.
