Category: Measurement
Citation share is the percentage of AI-generated answers across a defined prompt set in which a brand is named or cited as a source. It is the direct successor to share of voice: where SOV counted your slice of media mentions in a category, citation share counts your slice of the answers buyers actually see in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini. The metric matters because the AI answer layer is winner-concentrated — a typical generated answer names three to five vendors, so the tail is invisible in a way it never was on a search results page. Citation share is measured by running a fixed, buyer-intent prompt set against each surface on a repeating cadence and recording, per run, whether the brand is named, in what position, and alongside which competitors. Crackle PR publishes citation share quarterly through the AI Visibility Index, and uses the same methodology as the core reporting metric on every retainer — because impressions and clip counts do not tell a CMO whether an LLM will recommend them.
“Share of voice measured how loud you were. Citation share measures whether the machine repeats your name when a buyer asks who to hire. Only one of those closes deals in 2026.”
