What a Fintech PR Agency Actually Does (Beyond Press Releases)

    The short version

The thing most founders think a fintech PR agency does (write press releases, blast journalists) is maybe 10% of the actual work. The other 90% is what determines whether the program earns enterprise pipeline or just clippings — and it almost never makes the pitch deck.

    1. Compliance-aware narrative development

Every fintech claim has gravity. "AI-powered" can be a marketing line in martech and a regulatory question in lending. "Real-time settlement" means one thing in payments and another to a bank examiner. A fintech PR agency that doesn't pressure-test claims against compliance, legal, and (where relevant) bank-partner counsel will get the story killed before it ships — or worse, after.

What that looks like in practice:

    • Joint comms/legal review on every announcement before it leaves the building
    • Pre-cleared "approved language" for the categories where the brand operates
    • Regulator-aware Q&A docs that match the spokesperson's actual authority

“In fintech, the riskiest sentence in a press release isn't the one the journalist quotes — it's the one the regulator reads six months later. Compliance literacy is table stakes.”

    2. Tier-1 plus deep trade press

Fintech has an unusually strong trade press: American Banker, PYMNTS, Finextra, The Banker, Tearsheet, Banking Dive, Fintech Futures. These outlets are read by the buyers — bank executives, payments leads, treasury teams. Tier-1 coverage (WSJ, Bloomberg, FT, Reuters) builds enterprise credibility halo; trade press converts.

A real fintech PR agency runs both lanes in parallel, with different cadence, different angles, and different spokespeople. Founders typically own the tier-1 narrative; product and partnership leads carry the trade beat.

    3. Analyst relations — the underrated multiplier

Aite-Novarica, Forrester, Gartner, IDC, Celent. Fintech is an analyst-heavy buying environment because enterprise buyers (banks, insurers, payments processors) lean on analyst research to de-risk vendor selection. A briefing program that ships quarterly, lands inclusion in evaluative reports, and earns analyst quotes for the press is one of the highest-ROI activities a fintech PR agency runs.

It's also a force multiplier for AI visibility — analyst reports are heavily cited by LLMs, which means a Gartner mention echoes into ChatGPT and Perplexity for months. See LLM citation rate.

    4. AI visibility (GEO) — the new analyst report

Fintech buyers research vendors inside ChatGPT and Perplexity before they take a sales meeting. If the AI answer for "best embedded payments platform for fintechs" doesn't include your brand, you've lost the deal before the SDR dials.

What a fintech-aware GEO program looks like:

    • Earned media on the outlets LLMs weight heaviest in financial services (Bloomberg, FT, American Banker, Reuters)
    • On-site authority: glossary, definitions, FAQ, schema — clean, server-rendered, ingestible
    • A tracked query basket of 25–100 fintech buyer prompts measured monthly for citation share

“In fintech, AI visibility isn't a marketing nice-to-have. It's the new analyst report — and your buyer is already reading it.”

    5. Executive thought leadership with a real POV

The fintech category is loud, and most executive content is wallpaper. The bylines that land are the ones with a defensible, slightly uncomfortable point of view — on stablecoins, on open banking economics, on bank-fintech partnership dynamics, on the limits of AI in underwriting. Soft "innovation matters" thought leadership doesn't earn citations from journalists or LLMs.

    6. Crisis comms, ready to ship in minutes

Fintech crises move at trading speed: outages, fraud incidents, regulatory action, breach disclosures, partner-bank termination. A fintech PR agency without pre-drafted holding statements, named spokesperson protocols, regulator notification sequencing, and a 24/7 escalation path is a liability dressed up as a partner.

What this means for the buyer

When you're evaluating a fintech PR agency, the question is not "can you get me in TechCrunch." The questions are:

    1. Show me three current fintech retainers and the analyst quotes you placed for them.
    2. Show me your AI visibility dashboard for an existing fintech client.
    3. Walk me through your last crisis. What was the time from first call to first statement?
    4. Who on your team has read a bank examination report? An OCC consent order?

If the agency can answer those four questions concretely, you have a partner. If they pivot to case studies of "viral launches," you have a marketing shop.
