GEO vs AEO: What's the Difference and Which One Should B2B Tech Brands Prioritize?

    The one-line difference

GEO earns the citation. AEO shapes the citation. GEO is the authority layer — earned media, entity recognition, third-party validation — that decides whether an LLM considers your brand at all. AEO is the extraction layer — schema, TL;DRs, FAQ blocks, Speakable markup — that decides which sentence of yours actually gets lifted into the answer.

“GEO is the invitation. AEO is what you're wearing when you show up. Skip either and the LLM either doesn't invite you or invites the version of you you wouldn't want quoted.”

How to decide which to prioritize

Run a prompt basket of 15-20 buyer-intent questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and AI Overviews. Then diagnose:

    • You're not cited at all → GEO problem. No amount of on-site schema fixes an absent citation. Prioritize earned media and entity authority.
    • You're cited but the wrong sentence gets lifted → AEO problem. Fix TL;DRs, tighten your definition blocks, add Speakable markup to the sentences you want quoted.
    • You're cited by name but without a link → Mixed. Improve schema (Organization, sameAs), and continue building earned media that anchors your brand to canonical URLs.
    • You're cited well → Both are working. Widen the prompt basket and defend your surface share.

    Why doing only AEO fails

A common 2026 mistake: teams see LLM traffic loss, ship a schema audit, add FAQ blocks to every page — and see nothing move. That's because AEO fixes make you easier to lift if you're already in the consideration set. If you're not cited today, better schema doesn't summon citations; it just structures pages nobody is reading through an LLM lens.

    Why doing only GEO fails

The inverse trap: strong earned-media hits, brand mentioned across ChatGPT and Perplexity — but the wrong quote gets lifted. Maybe an off-message sentence from a third-party article. Maybe a stale product description. AEO is what lets you nudge the model toward the sentence you'd actually want in the answer.

“Earned media without on-site extractability is like getting a great meeting and then handing the buyer the wrong deck.”

What a combined GEO + AEO program looks like

    • GEO track (60%): Earned media in tier-1 and category trade outlets, analyst briefings, expert quote pursuit, backlink recovery, entity work (Organization schema, sameAs graph, Wikipedia surface).
    • AEO track (40%): TL;DR blocks on every money page, glossary depth, FAQ schema, Speakable markup, comparison tables, definition blocks that quote-lift cleanly.
    • Shared: One prompt basket, one dashboard, one editorial calendar. Both teams review the same weekly citation report.

    Bottom line

GEO and AEO are not competing frameworks. They are the two ends of a single citation pipeline: GEO decides whether an LLM considers you, AEO decides what it says when it does. Skipping either produces the same result — you show up in AI answers less than you should. For pricing on a combined program, see what GEO costs in 2026.
