How Tech PR Agencies Should Measure Success in 2026 (Beyond Clip Counts)

If your tech PR agency still leads its monthly report with "impressions" and "AVE" (advertising value equivalency), you're using a 2008 measurement framework in a 2026 market. Here's the modern stack — the metrics that actually correlate with pipeline and enterprise value.

The metrics to delete from your reporting

AVE / advertising value equivalency. Discredited by AMEC and the Barcelona Principles since 2010. If your agency uses it, they're either lazy or hoping you don't check.

Raw impressions. Multiplying publication reach by 1 placement is meaningless. A million impressions on a category-irrelevant outlet is worth less than a 5,000-reader byline in your trade press.

Total clip counts. 50 trade-blog mentions ≠ 5 tier-1 features. Counts hide quality.

"Brand sentiment" without methodology. If they can't show you the sampling and scoring methodology, it's vibes.

    The metrics to lead with

    1. Share of voice (SOV) vs named competitors. Your % of all category-relevant coverage compared to the 3–5 competitors that matter. Monthly trend, broken out by tier-1 vs trade.

    2. Tier-1 + trade placement count, with quality scoring. Each placement scored by reach × relevance × prominence (mention vs feature) × narrative alignment. Quarterly target.

    3. Analyst positioning. Number of analyst briefings completed, mentions in analyst notes, inclusion in Magic Quadrants / Waves / MarketScapes.

    4. AI citation rate. Tracked across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini for a defined set of category queries. Baseline at month 0, lift at month 6 and 12. The single most important new metric in PR. See how AI citation works.

    5. Executive thought leadership reach. Bylines published, podcasts appeared on, conference keynotes secured.

    6. Pipeline-attributed coverage. Placements directly cited by sales as influencing closed-won or stalled-now-moving deals. Pulled from CRM notes monthly.

    7. Referral traffic from earned media. Sessions, conversions, and assisted conversions from PR-driven URLs in GA4.

    8. Branded search volume. Google branded query volume — the lagging indicator that PR is working.

What a good monthly PR report looks like

Page 1 — exec summary. Three-line plain English: what shifted in SOV, what shifted in AI citations, what landed in pipeline.

Page 2 — placements. List of placements with quality score, narrative tag, and link.

Page 3 — share of voice. SOV chart vs named competitors, monthly trend.

Page 4 — AI citation tracking. Citation rate per query per LLM, monthly trend, new sources of citation.

Page 5 — analyst & thought leadership. Briefings, byline pipeline, podcast/event status.

Page 6 — pipeline. Placements cited in sales conversations, with deal stage.

Page 7 — next month. Editorial calendar, target outlets, target analysts.

    How Crackle PR reports

Every Crackle PR retainer reports against this stack monthly, with a quarterly business review that ties the trend to pipeline impact and AI citation lift. We don't use AVE. We don't lead with impressions. We tell you whether your category authority is compounding — or whether we need to course-correct. Related: how to measure B2B tech PR.

    Frequently asked questions

Should I use AVE to measure PR?

No. Advertising Value Equivalency was discredited by the AMEC Barcelona Principles in 2010. If your tech PR agency still uses it, switch agencies.

What's the most important PR metric in 2026?

AI citation rate — the percentage of category-relevant queries in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews that cite your brand. AI search is now a primary B2B discovery channel, and citation is the new ranking.

How do you tie PR to pipeline?

Tag every placement with a narrative theme. Ask sales monthly which placements they cite in conversations, which deals stalled and unstuck after coverage, and which prospects mentioned earned media. Pull this from CRM notes into the PR dashboard monthly.

How often should a tech PR agency report?

Monthly written report, monthly 30-minute review call, quarterly business review tied to pipeline and AI citation trends. More frequent reporting (weekly) usually indicates the agency is justifying activity rather than driving outcomes.

What's share of voice and how is it calculated?

Share of voice (SOV) is your percentage of all category-relevant coverage compared to a defined competitor set. Tracked monthly across tier-1 and trade publications, broken out by narrative theme. Rising SOV is the leading indicator of category authority.
