A San Francisco address buys almost no AI visibility

48.2 vs 47.1 — mean citation index, San Francisco companies vs all companies. In the Crackle PR AI Visibility Index, Q3 2026 edition, the 45 San Francisco–headquartered companies averaged a 48.2 citation index against 47.1 for all 100 scored companies — a 1.1-point difference.

  • 64 of 100 companies are headquartered in California.

Why this number matters

Location is one of the oldest proxies for technology credibility, and it is the one that survives least well under measurement. Crackle PR scored 45 San Francisco–headquartered companies and found their mean citation index effectively indistinguishable from the full panel.

The variable that did move the number was country. The 14 non-US-headquartered companies in the panel averaged 34.4 against 49.2 for US-headquartered companies — a 14.8-point gap, more than thirteen times the San Francisco effect.

For communications leaders outside the Bay Area, this is a budget argument. Relocating narrative gravity to San Francisco is not what closes the AI visibility gap; publishing structured, well-corroborated English-language material that answer engines can retrieve is.

Answer engines cannot read a zip code. They read whether your claims are structured, dated, and corroborated somewhere other than your own site.

How it was measured

Headquarters was taken from each company's own public filings or site at the time of scoring. Means are unweighted averages of the normalized 0–100 citation index inside each geographic subset of the same 100-company panel.

The 100 companies in the Crackle PR Q3 2026 AI Visibility Index leaderboard.

What this number does not prove

Headquarters is a single-label simplification of distributed companies. The San Francisco subset is also large enough (n=45) to be pulled toward the panel mean by construction, so the finding is best read as 'no measurable premium', not 'a penalty'.
